RESEARCH The Emory University Emergency Medicine Department's research program is concentrated in three "laboratories" covering each of the major domains of Emergency Medicine research:
Current research initiatives include NIH-funded studies regarding the neuroprotective properties of progesterone and its metabolites, a major NIH-funded clinical trial of a novel treatment for traumatic brain injury, research on the clinical utility and cost-effectiveness of directed ultrasound exams by emergency physicians, emerging infections and bioterrorism preparedness, hypertension, out-of-hospital direct to cardiac catheterization for ST elevation myocardial infarctions, congestive heart failure, end-of-life care, and strategies to deal with overcrowding in the emergency department.
Emergency Medicine faculty members are also engaged in a wide range of collaborative community projects to reduce gun violence, alcohol abuse, teenage crash deaths, falls in the elderly, and to increase the use of information technology to screen for intimate partner violence.
