Thank you for your interest in the Emergency Medicine Residency Program at Emory University School of Medicine.
The program is fully accredited by the Residency Review Committee for Emergency Medicine of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) until 2012. The three-year program follows a post-graduate 1-3 (EM 1-3) format. The class size is 19 residents per year.
We choose residents based on a strong medical school performance with an emphasis on the clinical years. Letters of recommendation, impressions from the interview, and medical school records are the primary determinants of rank level. We look for a diverse group of well-rounded individuals who will enjoy the challenges and rewards of caring for critically ill patients in a high-volume, inner-city, university-based academic center. A sense of humor, desire to learn, and an ability to work well with others are traits which are valued highly.
The program selects from among eligible applicants on the basis of their preparedness, ability, aptitude, academic credentials, communication skills, and personal qualities such as motivation and integrity. The program does not discriminate with regard to sex, race, age, religion, color, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, or veteran status.
The Emory University Emergency Medicine department participates in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) of the Association of American Medical Colleges. As a result, we do not accept paper applications. Minimum application requirements are the common application form, a personal statement, school transcript, Dean's letter, and three letters of recommendation - at least one of which should be from Emergency Medicine faculty.
The program also participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) (Toll Free number, 1-866-617-5837 or http://www.nrmp.org/contact.html) and all of our positions are available exclusively through the NRMP. You should contact the NRMP directly at 202-828-0676 for appropriate information concerning the EM-1 match in Emergency Medicine. The Department of Emergency Medicine does accept applicants with prior residency training, but does not give credit toward residency completion for any prior training. All Emory School of Medicine Emergency Medicine residents must complete all three years of the curriculum. All interviews are by invitation only. Application review begins in September and invitations for interviews are sent in October and November. The deadline for receiving applications for matriculation in the class starting July 2013 is November 1, 2012.
