Dr. Monica Khan Receives GCEP 2015 Service Award
We are pleased to announce that Monica Khan, MD, Chief Resident for the Class of 2016, has been awarded the Georgia College of Emergency Physicians (GCEP) In-Training Professionalism and Service Award. Monica is a native of Chicago who attended the University of Chicago as an undergraduate and Rush Medical School for her medical degree. She was recruited to Emory based on her strong academic and service records. Monica was selected to the chief resident position by her peers and our faculty. In a program loaded with stars, Monica has managed to stand-out with character and intensity. Her involvement with our Department’s Diversity Council has been an example of dedication to improvement and growth in a complicated topic.
It is not surprising that most people in our Department do not even realize all the contributions Monica makes to the community outside of work. Participating in community service is her passion. She has helped sort and package donated goods through the Atlanta Community Food Bank and has taught children basic medical skills with the local Girl and Cub Scout Troops - all after spending a long shift in the Grady Emergency Department serving the indigent population of Atlanta. Outside of residency, Monica has been most committed to the community as a Big Sister. She got involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Atlanta soon after moving to Atlanta in the summer of 2013. After a lengthy application and interview process, she was matched with a little sister, Jahsata, who was 7 years old at the time. Jahsata is the youngest of three children living with their working, single mother in West Atlanta. Although her mother is caring and attentive, she admits to being overwhelmed and Jahsata had experienced the effects of this. Monica and Jahsata have grown very close in the last 2 years, with Monica spending at least 8 to 10 hours together every month, talking and exploring her interests. Their activities together range from reading to baking and visiting the Fernbank Museum. Monica even taught Jahsata how to ride a bicycle.
It was with great pleasure that we nominated Monica for this GCEP recognition of her service. Monica will be presented with the award at the December GCEP meeting.
